The Search for The Dress

We all know it, that elusive piece of clothing you spy in a movie, magazine article, billboard ad, etc. that you just can’t seem to get out of your mind or find anywhere. This is ‘The Dress’. It was worn by Kirsten Dunst in the ‘Making Of’ featurette for ‘Marie Antoinette’.

I first watched the movie in late 2006, when I had just moved to a new city and ravenously watched all the movies either hadn’t had time or the inclination to see while I was living in New York. For a movie like ‘Marie Antoinette’, of course, I had to Netflix the DVD in order to watch the behind-the-scenes featurettes (why else would you own the DVD?) and listen to the production crew talk about set design, makeup, costumes, props…but I digress…Needless to say, I fixated on this dress, with Kirsten Dunst’s brand of cool, slouchy, vintage, Young Hollywood-ness. I imagine a skinny red belt on her waist. Since it was probably vintage I filed it away in the back of my mind for future reference.

Almost a year later, I was walking back to my hotel in Paris when I spied a vintage store. Lo and behold, right there on the front rack was the bright fuchsia version of The Dress! But, not knowing French or the protocols of vintage shopping in Paris, I decided to return for it the next day. You can guess what happened. I never went back, caught up in museum-ing, cafe-ing, and generally just walking my way through the City of Light.

Now I search for The Dress on eBay and etsy, hoping its evil twin will show up one of these days. Have you seen The Dress?

Hello,

Do you remember what hotel were you staying at? I’m living in paris right now and I’d love to try and find the store. I doubt if they’d still have it, but if Kirsten Dunst shopped there it’d be good enough for me haha
Thanks : )

I was staying at the Hotel Sevigne on Rue Malher in the 4th. I think the store was on the Rue Saint-Merri,
